The 4-Part Formula for Great Titles

With all my experience from years of selling on Etsy, I have discovered a formula that works well.
1. Start with the Main Keyword
The first part of your title should include your most important keyword.
This is the word or phrase that best describes your product. It should meet three criteria:
High traffic: Many people are searching for it.
Relevance: It matches your product perfectly.
Win potential: You have a good chance of ranking for it.
For example, if you’re selling a handmade tote bag, “tote bag” might be too broad. A more specific keyword like “personalized tote bag” could work better.
Why? It’s specific, has good traffic, and fits the product. Plus, customers searching for this are likely ready to buy.
Take time to research keywords. Tools like Etsy’s search bar or third-party apps can help. Look for keywords where multiple sellers are doing well—that’s a sign you can succeed, too.
2. Add a Variation of the Keyword
The second part of your title should include a variation of your main keyword. This gives you another chance to show up in search results. For example, if your main keyword is “personalized tote bag,” you could add “women´s shopping tote bag” as a variation.
This isn’t just about SEO. It’s also about helping customers understand your product. Different people search in different ways, so including a variation helps you reach a wider audience.
3. Include Context
Now that you’ve told people what your product is, it’s time to explain why they need it. This is where you add context. Think about the person buying your product and the occasion they’re buying it for.
For example, if you’re selling a tote bag, you could add phrases like “Mother’s Day gift” or “gift for her.”
Context helps your product stand out. Shoppers are often looking for something specific—a gift for their mom, a unique present for their best woman. When your title matches their need, they’re more likely to click.
Urgency can also make your title stronger. People are more likely to buy when they’re shopping for a specific occasion with a deadline. Mentioning an event like Mother’s Day creates that urgency.
4. End with a Sales Pitch
The final part of your title is your chance to shine.
Highlight a special feature or benefit of your product. For example, you could say “handmade” or “gift set.” This helps your listing stand out from the competition.
If you’re selling a set, mention it. For example, “tote bag gift set” tells the customer they’re getting more than one item. This can increase your chances of making a sale.
